MISC:   Rollfast Tandem posted by: bottomend on 12/12/2007 at 10:41:56 PM
Could anyone tell me if I could put a newer chain and cranks on my old Rollfast Tandem. Right now it has a skiptooth set on it. If I can't upgrade it, where do I get new cranks and chains???
Thanks

You should take off the skip tooth stuff and save it.
You can find inexpensive standard one-piece cranks and chains, etc on eBay.

Your cranks will work, you need to get new crank sprockets and a new sprocket for your rear wheel. You may be better off getting a complete rear wheel as finding a new sprocket for your rear wheel might be hard. You need to have the correct number of teeth for those crank sprockets so they stay timed correctly. It may be an expensive project, you might want to look for a newer tandem.

You didn't specify what wheel size, or brake type it is, or if it has one chain or two. Brian is right that if you're just going to ride it you might want something newer. Why would you want to hotrod an antique tandem? If you do, as Roller says, save the parts. It will allow you to ride the bike, but it won't be an 'upgrade.'
By 'the correct number of teeth' Brian means both chainwheels need to be the same size. If they are ordinary Ashtabula cranks, changing just the chainwheels might in fact be simpler than changing cranksets, since there has been more than one 'standard', but the same holds true for chainwheels: if the center hole or the drive hole in the chainwheel has the least amount of play, no amount of torque will keep it still on the crank. If you're planning to ride the bike, do the conversion but be prepared for some trial and error, and don't settle for any slop in the cranks or bearings.
Give us more detail, please. It's too slippery out to ride today.

FOR SALE:   2 Folding Bikes Auto Mini posted by: Katy on 12/8/2007 at 6:47:37 AM
I have 2 Senator Auto-Mini bikes that I am interested in saling. They are in great condition and not sure when they are from. They were my grandparents- probably the late 60's or early 70's era. I would like more information on these.

I think Austria. Take a look at the head badge. Do they have Thompson style bottom bracket? Ed

It's too bad but people tend to overlook the Auto-Minis when it comes to choosing a folder.I have a few of them myself and find that they are a good sturdy riding bike. The "Thompson style BB" aren't a problem as long as you keep them lubed.I'm not sure if you'll get much if you decide to sell them. Here's a pic of my favourite one......
