I have an old Mead Ranger Tandem that has a womens frame in front and mens frame in back with the rear handle bars linked to the front with a very cleaver sprocket and linkage arm design. The bike has big balloon tires,is complete and original and I have actually riden it, however heavy. Does anyone know what year this was made, and how I might find its value? Thanks. by: 72.69.0.190
For the most part mead bikes were built by schwinn. Can you post a pic of the tandem?Mead was a very old company---selling bikes before 1900---they went under in 1952(I'm told).Your tandem might be a colson, mead did sell some bikes build "other" than schwinn. by: 68.89.129.46
the Wheelmen www.thewheelmen.org list Rangers by two different Meads, one from Mead and Prentiss Manufacturing, 1899, which may have been a predecessor of Mead Cycle Company, both of Chicago- they date Mead Cycle Company from 1910. But the Wheelmen's database "only" goes up to 1918. Balloon tires date from the mid-twenties (although it's possible they're not original). In any case, the gent riding behind is a pretty old fashion. Somebody at the Wheelmen ought to be able to help. I have had the impression that Mead did their own manufacturing up until the 20s, but sam is seldom wrong. Try comparing chainwheels; that nearly always works. There's a million pictures at nostalgic.net to look at. I also want to see pictures. by: 209.7.150.163
I recently took apart the rear hub on my son's Raleigh and was unfamiliar with this type of hub so took it to a local bike shop who put it back together. The gears now slip and I'm unable to make the proper adjustment. This is an older bike, so replacement parts may be hard to find. Any suggestions? by: 67.72.98.45
There are exploded diagrams of your Sturmey-Archer hub on this site. To properly adjust the gear cable, do this: 1) Put the thumb shifter in 3rd gear 2) Loosen the adjusting barrel (at the end of the cable near the rear hub) so it is slack. 3) Now tighten it _just enough_ to take the slack out of the cable. That's all there is to it. by: 205.179.119.126
I suggest you might give the bike shop an opportunity to recheck it! Most shops and mechanics have a lot of pride and really want to fix it right for you. And they should be glad to give you the advice on use and adjustment, if this is not the case it's the wrong shop. What could have gone wrong: 1. If they reassembled the wheel and you installed it, there are some things that can go wrong here. Bring the bike in. 2. They may have reassembled it wrong. Ask them in a friendly way if this is possible. 3. The hub is extremely worn or damaged. This case will not have a low-budget solution but if you think the bike is collectible by all means pursue it. by: 71.99.123.211
I could use a bit of assistance info. Trying to separate the handle bar & fork for an overhaul. Center bolt is out, both collars on handle bar post are loose. Will not separate. Short of C-4, what is needed to drop the fork & lift the handlebars? Twisting to loosen them doesn't work. Tight! Vise, big hammer, what? I may be contacted directly: roberthparker@hotmail.com Thanks for any tips. :-) by: 70.142.36.119
Center bolt is OUT? I think you may need to put it back in and thread it in about an inch, then whack it with a soft hammer or hammer+piece of hardwood. If it's ALL the way out, the wedge is probably still wedged firmly in the steerer. by: 216.15.114.27
