MISC:   CEI taps & dies posted by: Ray Pond on 2/22/2006 at 3:13:22 AM
G'day, I've got a beaut old boxed set of CEI taps & dies that was clearly assembled for a specific purpose. I'm hoping someone may be able to confirm whether it may have been for manufacturing bicycles. It contains the usual smaller sizes from 3/16" to 3/8" in 26tpi but also has odd larger sizes such as 31/32"(30tpi), 1.29" and 1.37"(24 tpi). Some of the larger sizes are in both left- and right-hand threads. Any information at all would be most appreciated. Cheers, Ray

MISC:   Stella Bicycles posted by: Mark on 2/19/2006 at 11:47:41 PM
I have a pair of Stella aluminum frame bikes here. One larger than the other. I am into restoring cars and such, but do not much (if anything) about bikes. I have these covered up just to protect them, but was wondering if anyone had any information on them. They both ride really well and are in nice shape. I find names like Weinmann, Nervar and Simplex on the various mechanicals but the rest is in French. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Mark

RE:MISC:   Stella Bicycles posted by Ray Richards on 3/29/2006 at 1:22:32 AM
I'd love to see a picture. I could tell you a great deal from that alone. The higher end models had Compagnolo components. The Simplex etc. were lower end options. I had a Stella in the 70's and would love to have another. Most frames were steel by the way, Reynolds 531. French bikes were quirky; non-standard size components and threading.

I have an old Stella Bicycle with the number 5195 on underside of the frame. Its a ladies bike.It also has more words in French ,something ...like "vainqueur du tour de france du cinquantenaire" and something like..."weinmann610 vainqueur999" is on it also.I cannot find much info at all on Stella Bikes .Please help !!

I have just pulled my 1974 Stella all Campi parts from storage and am geting it back into riding condition. It is a girls bike, powder blue with a touring fork, reynolds double butted frame. I have no idea what it may be worth but has caused quite a stir in my local bike shop. Here comes the Stella Lady. Do you know it's worth?

I am glad to find out about Stella bicycles. I still own and occasionally ride an SX-73, bought in San Francisco in February of 1974. It is the namesake of the Atari 2600 video game system; I rode that bike to work at Atari every day at the time. The only parts of the original bike left are the frame (with fading decals), headset, handle bars, brake levers, seat post and brake calipers. Everything else has worn out and been replaced at least once.

I bought a Stella 10 speed at a police auction about 35 years ago. I do not know the model (I am at work now and cannot check it), but it is a heavy, steel-framed bike, so I assume it is lower-end as far as quality goes. Virtually everything is original on the bike. A friend has offered to swap out some parts (e.g. the rear sprockets and derailer to make climbing hills easier), but I don't know if this bike has any kind of collectability value. Do you know?

Rich, I just pulled ou a Stells from my basement that I had as a kid 32 years ago. I want to restore it as a labor of love but have not a clue where to get parts. I might be interested in parts if you are interested and they will match up. Me and a buddy rode all the time together, he was killed at 16 and I sold my bike for beer money at 18 or 19. I recovered it, but only after it was striipped apart. I badly want to get it back together!

MISC:   Larz Anderson National Bike Show: Sunday August 13th posted by: Peter Naiman on 1/17/2006 at 4:10:24 PM
We're holding 10th annual show at the Museum of Transportation at 15 West Newton Street., Brookline, MA. Starting time will be at approximately 9:00AM and run until 3:00PM with set up at 8:00AM, with the usual scenic Vintage Ride through the paths of the Emerald Necklace which runs through Boston and Brookline. Please put this on your schedule, as we plan to have a great time again this year. More information on the show to follow.

If folks are interested, I'll put together a swap meet close by as there are a few venues within 10-15 minutes of the Museum of Transportation grounds. Last years swap that Linda Pernice tried organizing in Watertown, didn't take place for a number of reasons, but if I can get enough early support, I'll put together a swap meet which will be well attended if I get the word out to everyone on my growing mailing list. So if your interested in a swap meet please write and let me know offlist.

Best regards,
Peter Naiman

MISC:   1896 Bicyle Owners Question!?!! posted by: Mr. M. Kitchen on 12/14/2005 at 5:24:34 PM
Some excellent friends of mine and good people to all, have an old Antique Bike they say was made in 1896 and the type they say to me is something called a "Fritzlof", (???) No. 5, (Fritzlof having a possible Misspelling-Minor) "This Fritlof Spelling being off the top of his head, because it was in a storage area at the time of discussion." They are very curious on who, what, when, where, why and/or how, about this bike and I'm trying to find out if any person kind help us on anything about this Bike. "FRITZLOF-1896-No.5" and it's possible value.? Assistance is much appreciated?
