Does anyone have any infomation on the ShaftDrive Rambler - it has wood wheels, nickle plated handlebars & leaf spring on the front end, twin shock absorbers on the rear and a multi speed transmission(?) Unscrew a cap & move lever to change gears. I suspect this is from the 1870/1880's era.

RE:MISC:   shaft drive Rambler posted by Jackie on 1/12/2000 at 5:46:56 AM
I could be wrong, but it may be the same bike as the shaft
drive Columbia of that era. I know Columbia built shaft
drive bikes then, and they've used the 'Rambler' name on
a lot of models over the last century.

I may be able to help. Can you send me a JPG photo to confirm what you have?

Look at the serial number on you bikes. Look at the serial number number in this forum. That will give you an ideal of what you have.

The Milwaukee show and swap was very nice. I got a few good deals and lots of parts and info sources for future reference. I went last year also and I think there were more vendors there in 99? Three vendors I wanted to buy from were not there. I wanted repro parts such as decals, handlebars, rims and rechromed original pieces. But here are some other shows coming up.

Sept. 10 - Kaukauna, WI for info call 1-920-759-1200 or 1-920-731-1106
Sept. 23 - Tuscola, IL for info call 1-217-253-6490 or e-mail at rdm131@webtv.net

Can someone let me know when the Rockford IL Stingray show is?

I noticed fewer vendors at the Monson, Mass show a couple weeks ago. Plus, the vendors that did come didn't seem to have much inventory. Who has all the good stuff, and why isn't it being sold?

MISC:   Old Blue Schwinn posted by: Jason on 12/8/1999 at 9:29:42 AM
I have an older (20 years?) schwinn that has the rachet on the front sprocket rather than the back. What is the deal with this? Was it a special kind of bike? The rear sprocket is normal except that it is bolted to the rim rather than resting on bearings. I am working on it and I have no idea what the deal is with it.

RE:MISC:   Old Blue Schwinn posted by Wings on 12/11/1999 at 10:34:39 PM
You have a fixed freewheel in the back and when you spin the chainring in front you hear the click, click, click. The rear wheel possibly says: Shimmano FF System only. The derailer is special and perhaps says: Positron only or somethin to that effect. The crank arms go into sort of a round black plastic washer. I have had several of them. I have one now on a Suburban. When you take the freewheel apart it will all fall apart by cogs. When you pull the crank arm out watch out--many little (small!) ball bearings will want to jump out all over the place.
I have tried to use the crank arms on other bikes but I have never been able to remove the rachet piece. If someone knows how, tell me.
I have seen the front crank arms used on old tandems for the stoker. This allows for independent pedalling.
This is Schwinns original version of SIS Shimmano shifters. The derailer is operated by a solid cable that pulls and pushes the derailer. If you can get it to work you would have click shifting.
I hope this helps.

I can verify what was posted on 12/11. I have a 1979 Schwinn Suburban 5 speed that is exactly like that. I have the solid shifter cable, the front freewheel (Shimano), etc. As it has got more miles on it the click shifter doesn't work as tightly.

I have an AAL I bought at Montgomery Ward in 1977. It was a copy of a bike used in the Olympics, It has a Shimmano system as you discribed and my neighbor has a min "70's Schwinn Suburban that has the same style system. I still have the bike, haven't had any problems and personally, I like changing gears without peddeling. Thats about all I know adout it.
Good Luck,

MISC:   when were these made ? posted by: martin on 11/26/1999 at 6:46:22 PM
We rescued a matching pair of Schwinn Traveller his and hers in gold with gen's and lights. The leather bags are pretty much history but all else seems to work fine. They are three speed with hand brakes. chrome fenders. When were they made, and are they worth anything. We ride them now but some people have said they are worth to much to ride anymore?

Any help would be appreciated

Not at this one. That's why I was asking if they were all like this one.

It was probably the rain. Go on a clear sunny day.Be prepared to spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.A lot of it.You will find good stuff there. The sellers ask way too much for there stuff(even the obvious garbage).Best bargains are at about 2:00-Closing. People selling become desparate.Good Luck
