AGE / VALUE:   Crown by Great Western Manfg. Co. posted by: Larry T. on 5/8/2005 at 8:59:47 PM
My brother just found a Crown Bicycle, made by the Great Western Manfg. Co., in LaPorte Indiana. It has a New Departure Model A rear hub. The rear wheel is wood, but the front is metal over wood. It looks older than my Hawthorne Trailblazer circa 1928. I can email photos of the bike and head badge to anyone. Does anyone have information on this bike maker?

WANTED:   Iver Johnson posted by: Dale Robinson on 4/17/2005 at 10:17:29 AM
Hello: Have restored/refurbished several fifties-thirties bikes. Am now beginning a complete show restoration of an early '20s Iver Johnson Truss Bridge, men's, large frame, red and black. Would like to hear from an IJ Guru, of course, or anyone who can lead me to a set of NOS Fisk Victor 28" tires, an NOS Troxel, Elmira Ohio large leather saddle with two diamonds cut in the middle, and especially the "Iver Johnson" decal on the front tube; I think I can save the small beautiful truss-bridge one on the seat mast and paint around it. I have correct wood rims, coke grips, etc. And some questions: I want to be as close to factory as possible; is the plating chrome or nickel on the sprocket, fork and handlbars? Anyone have any already plated to sell? And, is the paint lacquer? Can I use stainless steel same-diameter spokes and still be correct? Thanks, and my best to all in this good hobby...Dale

If it the Iver Johnson decal like this one,Chestnut Hollow,or Mapel island ,or Mwmory Lane all carry it.
If it's the "Mobicycly" decal you'll have to go to Nostalgic Reflections.---sam

MISC:   Senseman & Brickenstein, Salem NC, 1898 posted by: Tim Victor on 3/31/2005 at 11:12:56 AM
I was poking around at thewheelmen.org, and searched for my home
state of North Carolina in their database of early bicycle
manufacturers:

http://www.thewheelmen.org/sections/bicyclebrands/showresults_keyword.asp?search=nc&B1=Submit

It returned exactly one hit:

Senseman & Brickenstein, Salem NC, 1898

That got me curious since the history of cycling in NC seems to
be pretty much a black hole before the time my generation started
riding in the early 1970s. I'm also interested because the history
of the Moravian settlement of Salem (Old Salem to anyone in the
area) is so well documented through the early 1800s--particularly
the crafts there--but perhaps not so well after that.

I emailed to the librarian listed on that page but haven't gotten
a reply, so I figured I'd post a query here.

It seems unlikely that anyone will be familiar with that brand.
(I'd be quite happy to be surprised there though.) I might just
be a small-town tinsmith in the bike-boom era, advertising that
he'd build up a bike for anyone who cared to pay for it.

More reasonable hope: that someone might know where the Wheelmen
found the reference to that brand, to put in their database.

Thanks in advance for any help!

You might be able to find more info at your local library. There were over 300 documented bike manufacturers in the US prior to 1900, many of which made bikes in very small numbers. The book 'Collecting and Restoring Antique Bicycles' also has a list.

The Wheelmen are more helpful if you are a member.

AGE / VALUE:   Bikes on Antiques Road Show posted by: AviationMetalSmith on 3/5/2005 at 2:58:17 PM
Maybe there will be a re-broadcast if you missed it.
The PBS Television programme "Antiques Road Show" had a variety of old bicycles valued in the $6,000 price range.
Included were a Boneshaker, an Ordinary (or penny farthing), A tandem with the lady in the front, an ordinary with the small wheel in front,
and a safety bicycle with a strange chain.
Check your local TV listings under PBS stations. Sometimes these PBS shows are repeated a week later on the UHF affiliate (above channel 13).

Try Roadster area. It looks to me like an old frame with many newer parts. The crankset, e.g., looks 50s or 60s. Is the bottom bracket threaded in or is it clamped? (Is that what you mean by the "cotter pins?") The cotters in the cranks don't appear to be antiques at all.

WANTED:   Seeking info on old Schwinn posted by: Dave on 11/28/2004 at 7:43:44 PM
Hi,
I'm just beginning to research an old Schwinn and have been unable to locate a year, production date, parts availability info, etc. to aid in refurbishing the bike.
The serial number is BO (or BQ)544488 located next to the name plate on the front of the bike. It appears to have 27" tires, is kind of a 'hot green,' has Suntour shift levers, has "Chicago" on the front name tag with a number 0739 stamped on the name plate, and has Swallow 32-630 27 x 1 1/4 " tires.I cannot locate a model name.
Any help or direction would be appreciated.
Thank you. Dave

Lightweights is probably a better forum than this...
But it sounds like a bike-boom Varsity or Continental. Ashtabula crank or 3-piece? Round or oval head badge? Smooth frame joints or lugged? Heavy or light?
