AGE / VALUE:   Brought this up here to the top for your perusal posted by: Greg Barron on 5/28/2003 at 2:03:03 AM
I had to bring this up here and list it as it's own post cause I thought it deserved some notice and didn't want it burried in the lower postings. It is a response to "Sheesh" a little lower down the list. Hope it strikes a cord and gets a couple responses.

Greg

I don't think you can reasonably say the hobby has died. I mean I sell a hundred or more bikes a year, I just released a new model hiwheel, I sell parts to fix bikes on a regular basis and there is a healthy resellers market for the old originals and the replicas as well. Check on ebay and you'll see them pretty regularly. There isn't much traffic on this particular part of this particular site but that doesn't mean the sport has died. Think about what you are saying here, first off the bikes are old. REALLY OLD! How many are left out there and how many are still available or rideable? Secondly, there aren't too many people that make these bikes cause it ain't like these big old suckers are what you could call main stream. Thirdly, you gotta have some hutzpuh to ride them as they do put your butt 5 feet in the air and how many folks are brave enought to do that in the first place? A forth point, they aren't exactly K-Mart blue light specials, come on they ain't cheap so how many folks have the discretionary income to spend on what is undeniably a toy when they could spend half (or way less) as much on a mountain bike that they feel safer on and is more, how can I put it, adaptable to use. Fifth, you could help the sport by riding and posting more descriptive items such as how to get one, how you like riding, maybe you saw a cool hiwheel you'd like to tell us all about?
You know there are a few things you could do to help but if you don't then that's cool too. Here is an FYI for all, there is a great site at www.wheelmen.org and there is another great site called the Hiwheel Discussion Board at http://disc.server.com/Indices/121240.html There are some other good sources of info and supply out there as well, try www.wheelmen.org OR(shameless plug here) www.hiwheel.com that's me! Greg Barron, head bottle washer! Check out the customer picture pages and the new Superior model. You can also go to www.Victorybicycles.com After that you can go to Rustyspokes.com or Edlee and there are a bunch of other things/places as well. The Wheelmen yearly meet is in Elgin IL. this year in July and should have a major amount of riders in attendence in addition to swap meets and lectures and other such truck.
Basically the horse ain't dead so don't beat it yet. Go for a ride, enjoy your bike and keep the wheels turning!

I am seeking information about the design of the headbadge on my very early 1890's Humber safety bicycle.

It has a 30 inch front wheel, and a 26 inch rear. No freewheel. The headbadge was probably a decal. I'm looking for old pictures, illustrations in books etc. anything to help me determine the exact design of the original headbadge.

AGE / VALUE:   Murray skybolt posted by: Bobby on 5/5/2003 at 5:54:11 PM
I have a Murray Skybolt girls bike. Does any one know the year it was produced the serial # M3 5011-044108.. found on the front of the frame.. Thanks Bob

RE:AGE / VALUE: Murray skybolt posted by John Metz on 5/18/2003 at 10:31:26 PM
Serial numbers are of little use as I have found no charts
for Murrays and efforts to obtain that info from the company
lead nowhere. From what I have learned through various WEB
searches, they where made from around 1955 t0 the mid sixties.
The ones from the fifties seem to have the name Skybolt 64-X
while the 60s models are simply skybolt. I'm not sure what
year the numerals were dropped. On the older models the
seatstays butt into the frame while the later models have
the seatstays welded to the outside of the seat tube. This
is not cast in stone but I'm reasnably sure is fairly
accurate from numerous photos I have veiwed on the WEB. Its
fustrating that so little info exists on Murray bikes. I
have a Murray Jet Fire(boys) and a Skybolt(girls) that
appear to be form the mid 60s. Hope this helps.

RE:MISC:   SHEESH posted by Skip on 5/6/2003 at 12:01:20 PM
No, not the whole hobby, just the High-Wheeler and Bone Shaker side. They are too expensive! Plus who cares about expensive European road bikes?

Sting-Rays, fat tire bikes and English bikes with fenders are going gangbusters, and those bikes are still reasonably priced.
