AGE / VALUE:   English Made High Wheeler posted by: karl on 3/16/2002 at 12:14:17 AM
I just found an original, 1800's high wheeler. I cannot mide any markings other than "rapid" on the hub. It is a 52", wooden "T" andles, missing the spoon, good rubber, radial spokes, never been repainted, all is solid, not a hammock saddle, pedals are "homemade". In rideable condition. Any info on where I might look for additional markings...anything. And how much is something like this worth?? Thanx for your time.

Hi Karl,
I don't know if I can help but if you can get me some pics of the bike, I'd be willing to try. Pics are worth a thousand words. What makes you think it is English?

Greg

We currently make an accurate reproduction rear wheel that may work for you. It is a copy of the Victor wheel of the period. We have also made the Columbia style wheel but are not stocking any at present. If this helps you, e-mail me for prices and availabilty. Al Sneller

MISC:   Replicas posted by: Blake on 2/15/2002 at 3:55:40 PM
Looking to buy my first Hi-Wheeler. I have been to the RBR web page. Does anyone else make a replica? Or is RBR the way to go for my first one?

RE:MISC:   Replicas posted by Steven on 2/16/2002 at 5:48:48 PM
Try WWW.victorybicycles.com they would appear to be far superior in both specification and price to RBR. Otherwise you may want to check an original out at the April 13th auction at www.copakeauction.com/2002bike/index.htm

Generally speaking, you get what you pay for. If you plan to ride the bike seriously, the RBR bikes probably aren't your best alternative. Their price is however very appealing and they do offer acceptable quality and a reasonably acceptable replica.

look at www.copakeauction.com/2002bike/index.htm for quite a number of bicycles. Whether they are rideable or not needs to be verified.

AGE / VALUE:   The letter "D" ? posted by: sam on 2/10/2002 at 3:44:38 PM
I'm working on an old motobike--maybe pre-teens.Has the same sprocket as used on Sears Master. When I removed the sprocket and head tube cups both were stamped on the back side with the letter "D".The stamping was like that used to stamp searial numbers on BBs but only the single letter "D".Any ideas on this? Anyone ever seem this before?

WANTED:   Mead Pathfinder info. posted by: Charlie on 2/7/2002 at 4:53:47 AM
Hi - I posted this over in the balloon group, but perhaps someone here might know. I have a late 1920's Mead Pathfinder (motorbike design) that has a tool tank. While I have seen Ranger decals, I have never seen a decal for a Pathfinder. I am wondering what the detailing is supposed to look like on the tank. Thank you.

AGE / VALUE:   What was it? posted by: Walter on 2/5/2002 at 11:10:14 PM
In an old barn, I found parts to an old bike. The 80 year old lady told me that the bike had two large wheels with a ;little wheel for steering in the front.I have the 3 wheels, fender, and seat and a few more pieces, but no frame. would like to see what it looked like! Thanks

RE:AGE / VALUE:   What was it? posted by teun on 2/7/2002 at 1:12:58 PM
sounds like a three-wheeler of some sort. Probably 1880's. What size(s) are the tires (height + width)? Hard or air tired? What do the parts look like? Same for Hubs and Seat?

MISC:   Wood Frame Bike pre 1900 posted by: Tom on 2/2/2002 at 12:37:28 AM
I met a guy this week who has a wood frame for a bike. Very ornate lugs made of steel and nickel plated. He asked if I had any info on it. It is just the frame no fork. I did have a headbadge many years ago but it is gone now. It did not have a name but it had a comet going through a circle or into a circle. The comet was going from the top left or right down to the opposite side. Has anyone heard of this bike. I know nothing about it. He would like to get it so he can take pictures of it complete. It won't be ridden. He does not want to do a pro restoration.

RE:MISC:   Wood Frame Bike pre 1900 posted by Mike on 2/8/2002 at 2:02:05 PM
Sounds like an old hickory, circa late 1800s. Valuable frame. The book "Collecting and Restoring Antique Bicycles" has a section on wood frame bicycles. You might be able to identify it from the photos. None appear to have head badges though.

RE:RE:MISC:   Wood Frame Bike pre 1900 posted by Dave on 2/10/2002 at 3:59:16 PM
Hi I think the bike you have is a comet bike made in Toronto Ontario, Late 1890's. I have some pictures of this bike and I have reproduced some head badge Decals.I have a comet bike with same decal but it is a metal frame. Get back to me if you like. Dave
