I just bought this from a co-worker, it was his father's. I would really like to know the history of it, I cannot find a serial number. Can someone help? Anyone seen this bike before? Where are the most common places for a seials number other than the seat tube? Thanks Tom oldjoes@aol.com

Is that a Shimano 3-speed hub? If it has a two-letter code stamped on the hub shell, the first letter might be the year with A=1976. Sturmey hubs went out of fashion about then. There was a transitional period when US-made frames could still compete, provided they used Japanese components... Huffy, AMF/Roadmaster, Ross did this. So did Trek for that matter but by '83 they were importing frames too. by: 209.7.150.163
The hub says Shimano, made in Japan E1. Do you know what year the E1 stands for? Thanbks very much. Tom by: 205.188.116.77
based on the statement I gave, which I found on the vintage trek site, that would be about 1981. by: 66.225.38.87
Thanks, based on your info, I found a site with the following chart: Shimano Year Code A B C D E F G H I J K L M 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 Shimano Month Code A B C D E F G H I J K L Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec According to this, the hub was made in September of 1980. At least now I have a ballpark of the bikes age, which is probably 1981 like you said. by: 64.12.116.77
I think I should have counted on my fingers... if A is 76, E would 80. by: 209.7.150.163
